One Thing Right
Chapter 12
"One Thing Right"
Seulgi's eyes followed Joy while she paced back and forth inside her and Irene's unit. Joy didn't made her close the door once she got back from work and constantly questions Irene and Wendy's whereabouts at this time that they're supposed to be back already.
It's already late and Seulgi managed to conclude something after observing Joy the entire time. Her heavy eyebags, anxiousness and crumpled shirt, the girl was obviously concerned too much about her unnie.
"Will you please stop being silent and become useful for me? Go ring Irene!!" Joy dismissed her investigative self and assisted her right away. One other conclusion she made, Joy's a hot mess.
"Don't worry too much. Irene and Wendy are grown ups, they can handle themselves." Seulgi said as she dialed Irene's phone.
"Oh don't start with me, I trust Wendy unnie but Irene unnie?" Joy rolled her eyes, she suddenly remembered what that older lady had told her the other day about liking Wendy. She trusted her and looked up to her, but she felt so betrayed.
"Whoah! Didn't you say you were her fan? What happened?"
"I was! But not until when your friend wanted to take away someone precious from me."
Seulgi was amused. Being an accountant surely made her busy, missing out all the fun in hanging out with the cousins and her bestfriend.
"Your boyfriend likes Irene?"
Joy only looked at her with disgust and never bothered saying anything. Perhaps she blurted out something non sense. But hey, that doesn't satisfy her curiosity...
"So you have a boyfriend?"
"YAH! This is not the time for you to ask me about such matters!!! Seriously I'll break your neck if Wendy unnie doesn't come back to me." Joy trailed off, she was getting nervous. Wendy wouldn't do anything wrong, right? She promised her. If Irene let Wendy do something harmful to herself then she swear she'll feel her wrath once she comes back.
Seulgi didn't know how Joy turned out to be this mad at her when just the other day they were teasing and laughing at each other's antics. This just shows how much she really looked out for Wendy.
Seulgi's calls were not getting through but she knew that if she'll quit dialing Irene, Joy would end up exploding. So she tried once again... and brought up something to talk about to calm her nerves.
"Wendy is a likeable person. I wouldn't really ask why Irene unnie fell for her."
"WAIT! You knew?!" Joy was shocked and betrayed at the same time.
Seulgi nodded as an affirmation. "In case you have forgotten, Irene and I are bestfriends. There are no secrets between us."
"And in case you have forgotten too... I am Wendy's cousin... and being her relative, I have the authority to break someone's neck if they hurt my Wendy unnie. You and Irene unnie are no exceptions." Joy glared at her threateningly.
Seulgi gulped but at least her risky conversation with Joy made her feel all loose. She knew the tall girl was only concerned so much about Wendy, she is too, but if she show her that then they both will end up panicking together.
"Since when you knew?" Joy started asking.
"Come sit down over here and I might tell you." Seulgi offered, she has to make sure that the latter is still well taken care of. She didn't want to dissapoint both Wendy and Irene.
Joy took the seat in front of her in the living room. She feels the dizziness but she has to stay awake and look for Wendy. She was about to get up when Seulgi took her phone and covered her with a blanket.
"I'll call both Wendy and Irene with our phones. I promise I'll wake you up once I got through any of them."
Joy was about to retaliate but Seulgi already left her and the warmth of this blanket was giving her a hard time to stay awake. It didn't help either when Seulgi shut off the lights in the living room.
Seulgi did her promise though, Joy was watching her from the comforts of the living room dialing non stop in the dining area. While watching her, Joy saw how anxiousness took over Seulgi as well with the way she's biting her nails while she's dialing both. She then realized how the latter was acting all strong in front of her in order for her not to worry too much. Her impression of Seulgi being kind hearted person like her Wendy unnie was true and it's the reason why she's easily trusting her too.
After a few more minutes of watching Seulgi, she finally fell asleep. But that's after she assured herself that Wendy will be fine... especially now that there are these kind and warm hearted people around her.
---
"What do you think you're doing?" These were the words that made Irene realize the consequences of her action. Her bravery was washed away the moment Wendy spoke those words after she claimed her lips.
To Irene, her actions were the result of her realest feelings, Wendy has become the center of her desire. When the younger woman started her self pity, Irene was triggered to confess despite the possible negative consequences of her actions. She just couldn't tolerate someone she liked so much to scorn herself like that. She thought the risk will all be worth it as long as she could tell Wendy how much she's loved and cared for, different from what she's believing in.
However, Irene got carried away. Not only did she confessed, she crossed her boundaries and kissed her as well. It was all because of that question Wendy asked about happiness. Irene would've ignored the question if she was asked way before, because she didn't know what it meant either, not until her heart decided what it wanted later on. She has never experienced liking someone this much, it was incomparable to Bogum nor the past relationships she had.
The desire to see, hear and feel Wendy. The desire to know Wendy is okay and living. The desire to make Wendy feel loved. Satisfying all these and more desires centered to her brought her happiness. And the kiss proved that conclusion.
But, Irene was also mature enough to realize how insensitive she became to Wendy's feelings. She knew it when she felt her kiss was not returned. She maybe feeling the heights of being in love when she captured her lips, but the target of her love is still in question with how she's taking all this in.
Irene forcefully stopped herself from kissing her and her heart almost dropped upon hearing Wendy's cold voice.
She couldn't look at the younger girl straight to her eyes but when Wendy stood up from the swing, she quickly stopped her from leaving by instinct.
"I'M SORRY!!!" Irene screamed apologetically while she held Wendy's arm tightly. She was scared that the latter would walk away.
"Are you playing with me?" Wendy replied, hurt was visible in her eyes.
"I'm not playing with you. This is how I feel for you, Wendy. I really like you.... but..."
"But?"
Wendy was growing impatient, and Irene was starting to get anxious and hesitant. She had not planned to confess nor kiss her this day, she had not seen this coming. She was begging her brain to explain her actions and make up excuses for her not to leave but she just couldn't find anything. Irene didn't notice how she's taking much time in her own mind when Wendy cackled like a mad woman and return her to a fearful reality.
"What is there to like about me?" Wendy's voice cracked. But instead of daring her, the question sounded more like a plead... Asking Irene to convince her that there really is an existing answer to end her life-long question to herself. She coulnd't grasp that there was something to like when she hated herself so much.
Irene gasped upon hearing her. How could she show hesitance in front of this person? She asked herself. Irene should have known better, that wavering and making up excuses in front of Wendy would only worsen her situation and this wasn't her goal. Her goal was to make her feel loved and happy to stop the doubts, hate, and unwanted train of negative thoughts. That's how it should be.
"Just you, being Wendy." She responded with all honesty and Wendy looked at her disappointingly. Irene noticed how the younger woman anticipated her response only to be retaliated, so she made sure to respond in a way Wendy wouldn't be able to ridicule herself. She decided that, since her feelings were already out and clear, the only direction she should be taking is to make Wendy believe and trust in her love.
"That's stupid. You don't even know about me. Just a few months ago, you wanted to treat me as a criminal and now you liked me? You've got to be kidding me."
Wendy bringing up the past again was only to inflict the same pain she's currently feeling from her. Wendy is running out of ideas to hurt herself so she's unconsciously taking whatever there is to dismiss the idea that Irene liked her.
"We're passed that phase and I like you now. Don't you think it's petty to bring up something from the past just to shove me away? But hey, I got news, I still like you. So, what else would you like to bring up?"
Irene knew she's currently walking on thin ice, but she just won't back down anymore. She will fight for her feelings to get through.
Wendy sighed. "If you're just feeling bad about your attitude towards me before, then I'm telling you it's fine now. I won't tell anybody and we can be friends. You don't need to go beyond that just to say sorry to me." She spitted every excuse she finds in order to make Irene change her mind and take back what she had said.
"It's been just a short time. You don't know anything about me. You might have just made up wrong impressions of me, it wouldn't last long that you'll hate me too just like everybody else! Just like I hated myself." She continued and this time the tears overflowed from her eyes. Wendy's tears were out of fear... fear that she'll start to believe in whatever Irene's saying and end up getting hurt in the end. That's why she wanted everything to stop now, before it blossom to anything bigger and much more painful to recover from.
"If I only feel sorry for you, then I'll apologize for it and not confess. I like you Wendy, and I'm also in the process of loving you more everyday!" She moved closer towards Wendy and carefully caressed both of her face to look at her. Irene quivered at how broken Wendy appeared, with her eyes shedding tears but she realized how bittersweet it was to see emotions and not just full of emptiness like before. But this emotion of sadness and fear, slowly, she wanted to take all of those away and replace it with only happiness and love. At this time and place, and with the one where her heart lies, Irene swears to make Wendy the center of not just her desire, but her whole world. She'll do whatever it takes to make her find happiness, even if she has to sacrifice her own. Because this is what real love meant for her, to only wish the best out of this life for the one that holds her heart.
"I love you, for who you are. Your strength, your weaknesses, your beauty and flaws, I love the whole you." She curled the strayed hair from Wendy's face to the back of her ears. Her eyes gazed at her softly with only adoration for every part of her face. "We may have spent a short time together, but in that short time you're belittling, you crashed the walls I've built over the years in my heart. It was only you who have done that, so tell me Wendy, am I wrong to feel this towards you in a short span of time?" Her eyes went back to meet Wendy's, which were already looking back at her with astonishment.
Irene only smiled at her and wiped her tears. She then continue her heartfelt confession, because at this point even if she wanted to stop, her heart is already the one taking over her whole being. It's this big and powerful, the love she has for Wendy. "No matter how much I push you away with despicable words, your kindness healed everything to me. You're the cure to all the pain that life bestowed on me."
This time, Wendy's eyes softens and completely gave in. Irene's words got through her, and now she's slowly absorbing everything. Wendy was having difficulty to sink everything in because she has never seen herself the way Irene stated. How can a mess like her be able to give hope to someone like Irene? When she couldn't even find herself one... but this confession she's hearing... not only made her heart throbbing but it also changed her own outlook about herself. Maybe, she was just a mess, but she was never broken... and that there is also light for her in the darkness of living this life... and maybe... that light is...
...Irene.
"A-aren't you in love with the father of your child?" Wendy brought up nervously. Their past conversation was instilled in her mind because Irene was giving troubled expression over him before. She thought, she has to eliminate all her doubts about Irene by digging her deepest secrets and in order to fully believe her. It may sound that she's pushing her way to her private life but... she has to know everything. Wendy is still in her right mind... to not enter a relationship with someone that's still tangled with a previous lover.
But even before Wendy could ask that, Irene already contemplated about it way before. If what she's feeling for Bogum was over and it's now really Wendy who she's in love with. There were a few occurrences already that gave her answers but Irene still wanted to have certainty. She wanted to make sure that everything is all settled in her heart before entering Wendy's life. She wouldn't want to cause her pain in the future once Bogum stepped back into her life again. Because despite all his sins to her, whether she liked it or not, Bogum will always be part of her life as he's the father of her child.
Irene assured to clearly answer other questions like if she's just confused with her feelings because Bogum tore her apart with his continuous infidelity? Does her feelings for Wendy just a short time adoration to cover the hole in her heart? If ever he comes back and Wendy is beside her, who will she pick to be with in the end?
She got her answers right away though, because while she was thinking about the two, her heart only beats rapidly when it's Wendy occupying her thoughts.
"I'm in love with you, now." Irene responded with certainty and smiled at her reassuringly.
"But, your baby..." Wendy said almost inaudible, her head lying low.
Irene only caressed her face to look at her. "I understand. If you cannot accept me and my past then I won't force you to. Just let me love you at least, even from a far."
"Why are you crying?" Wendy also made the same gesture to the older's face and gently wiped her tears. They stood closely at each other, their warmth and scents giving them comfort.
"I know that it's hard to accept a woman with huge responsibilities now, I've already thought about that and I won't really blame you if you think the same. But I'm serious about you Wendy, at least let me still show you how much I really love you..." It was the truth, Irene has been bothered by the fact that having a baby could make anyone have second thoughts of having a relationship with her.
Having a child is not a light responsibility but as its mother, Irene accepted it'll be hard to find a partner that will embrace both of them. Truthfully, she already gave up the thought to find another father for this child, she has settled with giving this child the chance to be connected with his biological father no matter how much she disliked him. However, when her heart chose Wendy, she grew hopeful that the girl would be able to accept her as whole with a child... but now that it turned out to be the opposite.. she'll now move on from that wishful thinking because she wouldn't oblige her to do so. What matters to Irene now, is to make Wendy feel her love, even if it won't be reciprocated anymore.
Wendy distanced herself from Irene and it's an action that made the latter's heart dropped.
"Wendy?" She called out nervously.
"I want to see through you." Wendy spoke right after she took only a few steps back.
"What?"
"I want to feel through you." She continued.
"Wendy, what are you talking about?" Irene was getting more worried with whatever the younger woman was talking about, off-topic?
"I want a changed world with you in it, and that includes your baby."
Irene gasped and she immediately covered her mouth with both of her hands due to shock. This time, it was Irene having a hard time sinking in everything. How should she react? She wasn't expecting this reaction at all.
"I have depression, Irene..." Wendy stated with difficulty but she wanted to lay to her the truth just like what she bravely did. "...but I wanted to change. I know I'm just saying this in a spur of the moment... changing was never an easy task for the likes of me... I don't even know... maybe tomorrow I'm back to being down again." She paused yet again breathing heavily, catching up with it and putting into words what this overwhelming feeling she has now for Irene.
"People may judge me that I'm full of negativity, I myself agree to that because I'm always looking at the events happening to my life as a result of the mistakes I've done... but with you... I've felt from this night... from your confession... that you're the one thing right that finally happened to me." She looked at Irene with hopeful eyes. "You..."
Wendy trailed off yet again. The older woman wanted to encourage her to convey whatever she wanted to say and that it'll be okay, but Wendy was taking a step backward with every step forward she took.
"No. I won't depend on you... I'm not accepting your feelings because I wanted to depend on you. I'll heal myself because that's how it should be." Wendy made herself clear and Irene understood it very well. Jisoo back then wanted to do everything by herself, despite having depression, she wanted to act independently like every other useful human being and not be a burden to the people around her, and Irene always respected that. She even grew fondness over this kind of courage.
"Of course." Irene nodded and patiently awaits Wendy to continue with her unfinished sentiments earlier.
"You... Y-you'll be a reminder for me to get better with my life." She finally resumed. "I'll continue to work in improving my life, because it's with you I..." She paused. "I felt my heart... beating."
Irene can no longer restrain herself from embracing this wonderful being in front of her, who's words were completely melting her away, she threw herself in Wendy's arms and caressed her tightly.
"H-hey... I'm not finished, you know?" Wendy shied away.
"I'm listening. But I want you to feel it too... how my heart's beating also for you."
For the first time in this evening, Wendy's genuine chuckle graced Irene's ears again. "Are you laughing at me?" She teased.
"Nope. It's just that your words are too sweet... they're making me cry." Wendy embraced Irene back and finally cried heavily. Pouring out all her worries, doubts, hatred and self pity to finally allow the love to occupy her now pulsing heart.
Irene no longer questioned her contradicting words and actions, instead, she rubbed her back to comfort her. A gesture to tell her that it's okay to cry, to show her weaknesses, and that she will be there for her from this point onwards in her life. She will accept her wholly, love her, and be a reminder that everything will be alright in this life now that they are together, now that they have discovered a reason to continue living.
